Staying sexually pure while single can be a struggle for both men and women. It doesn’t help that we live in a sexually saturated culture where sex before marriage is encouraged versus embraced. If you are single and waiting, let us encourage you with 5 practical and biblical ways that you can remain sexually pure while waiting for marriage.
Seeking and securing accountability has always been one of the biggest blessings for Christians. When we can link arms with like-minded brothers and sisters, it causes the enemy to lose ground in our lives. Of course, part of having accountability also means being open and honest with godly, wise, and safe individuals.
Accountability relationships will help get you through the toughest of times and rejoice with you in the most glorious of times. Either way, when maintaining a sexually pure lifestyle, having support and prayer warriors in your corner are sure to help you through.
Stay Plugged in at Church
Piggybacking on having accountability partners, we also recommend staying plugged in at church. You may find a variety of support through small groups such as a single’s group, all-women’s groups, or all-men’s groups. This is also one of the reasons behind God’s instruction to “not give up meeting together… but encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:25).
On the other hand, staying plugged in at church also gives you the ability to consume your time with things pleasing to God. Consider joining a ministry and serving in some capacity to be a blessing to others.
Embrace Daily Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
Fellowship with the Holy Spirit goes much deeper than reading scripture and praying when we feel like it. On the contrary, to have fellowship and build a relationship with our Creator King, it is something to embrace and walk out daily. This means memorizing and meditating on His word. When you become so filled with the truth, it will become more difficult to fall for the lies.
You will also find that God’s word will be everything you need in the proper time. It will sustain you, strengthen you, convict you, guide you, and encourage you. Embracing daily fellowship with the Holy Spirit will also help “teach you to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age” (Titus 2:12).
We are all human, and with our humanity comes flesh. Flesh has a unique way of bringing you to the point in life where you question your passions versus God’s promises. In this case, it’s important to take Heavenly Father at His word.
Psalm 16:11 holds a great promise – “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” This combines the trust and faithfulness we can have when choosing to purposefully seek Him and follow through with self-control of the flesh.
Be Encouraged by the Blessings
Yes, God created sex. However, His instructions are to wait for and enjoy it within the context of marriage. Throughout this waiting period, God is teaching you to find all your desires and pleasure in Him, and Him alone. It seems so easy to say, yet incredibly hard to actually walk out. This is where remembering God’s promises of blessings to those who abide in Him and follow His instructions come into play.
Simply put, it’s not impossible to be single and pure. It comes down to being seriously committed to the Lord and pleasing Him through your choices. Take courage in going against the ways of this world, and “flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22).
