7 (Simple) Prayers for the Hurting Husband
Peace in His Heart
When a man doesn’t have peace in his heart, it can make it hard for him to see things clearly. Pray this prayer for restored peace and protection against stumbling:
“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” (Psalm 119:165)
Father, I pray that my hurting husband would have your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help him to fix his eyes on you, the author and perfecter of his faith. Help him to see things clearly and guard his foot against stumbling during difficult moments in life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Forgiveness of Heart
There are moments when your husband may have been offended by you, a family member, a co-worker, or a friend. Unforgiveness opens the door to other opposing fruits of the Spirit, so pray this over your husband so that he may seek and embrace forgiveness:
“Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.” (2 Corinthians 2:7)
Heavenly Father, I pray that You would comfort my hurting husband in a way that would lead him to forgiveness. May he see its life-changing power and no longer be overwhelmed by the sorrow that unforgiveness causes. Thank you in advance for answering my prayer. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Wounded in Spirit
There are many reasons why a husband’s spirit can become wounded. Perhaps the loss of a job, a missed promotion, or a series of bad choices. Regardless of the circumstance, here is a prayer to pray for your husband’s wounded spirit:
“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:13)
Lord, show my husband the power of your saving mercy and grace. Although things may not go according to plan, comfort my husband and let him know that Your plans are best. I pray that he would have a thankful heart and choose to walk in joy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Self-Control and Temperance
Patience can be difficult at times, especially for husbands. Oftentimes, they have extra stresses that wives cannot understand (and vice versa). Pray this prayer of self-control/temperance over your husband:
“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” (Proverbs 16:32)
Father, I pray that my husband would be a person of patience and self-control in all he does and says. Help him to search out a matter before responding to it and give him wisdom in all decision-making. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
If your husband is battling with anything that has caused heartache, physical health issues, and the like – pray this over him:
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
Lord, I know and believe that you heal the brokenhearted. So I ask that You would search within my husband for any areas that need your healing touch. Show him how we can play a part in his healing by acknowledging and acting on the wisdom you give him. Send the right people with the right words to comfort him in this season of his life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Similar to not having peace, going through unsettled situations can cause hurt in husbands that only God can heal. Cover your husband with this scripture and prayer:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
Heavenly Father, You are the waymaker, miracle worker, promise keeper, and the light in the darkness. Whatever the source of my husband’s unsettled situation is, I ask that You would expose it and help him become settled. Give him the tools he needs to get to the other side of this for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Restoration and Joy
These two go hand-in-hand because where there is restoration, there can be joy. If your husband is hurting and cannot experience the fullness of God’s joy, pray this scripture and prayer:
“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” (Psalm 13:5)
Lord, help my husband trust in your unfailing love. I pray that his heart would rejoice over your salvation and that he would experience real restoration in any brokenness. I thank you that he will have true joy that can only be found in you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Even if your husband is not necessarily hurting in some of these ways, you can still pray these over them to protect them from any snare the enemy may have set up to hurt them in the future. Boldly proclaim the Word of the Lord and pray with confidence, having faith that God will do what He says He will do.
