Prayer is a powerful tool for marriages, which is why we’d like to share several scriptures for husbands to pray over their wives. Communicating and petitioning the Father on behalf of your spouse is not only a selfless act of love, but it also strengthens the marital bond. Prayer allows you to focus on your spouse in a positive light physically while fighting on their behalf spiritually. Husbands, the next time you are praying over your wives, incorporate the Scriptures below.
10 Scriptures for Husbands to Pray Over Their Wives
The following Scriptures are verses related to godly character. We’re not saying your wife has issues in this area; however, we must be honest with ourselves. Walking and living out a Christian lifestyle should always be anchored in constant growth in our godly character. We are not perfect but we should strive to be as much like Jesus as possible.
Walking in Self-Control
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)
Pray that your wife will have self-control in all she says and does. In the times where she seems to lack it, instead of making a big deal about it, go to the Father and pray that she would not be like a city whose walls are broken, but that she will be strengthened to bear the fruit of self-control.
Godly Feminine Leadership
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:3-5)
This entire passage is a prayer within itself. Pray that your wife would have the wise counsel of older women but that she would also exhibit these characteristics for younger women. This is especially important if you and your wife have daughters.
Good Caretaker of the Home
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. (Proverbs 31:27-28)
Pray that your wife would embrace her role of helping be the caretaker of the home, you, and your children (if applicable). It may not be easy at times, but your prayers could be the extra strength to help her get through.
Strength and Increased Faith
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” )Mark 9:94)
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy. (Psalm 28:7)
We all struggle with strength and increasing our faith, all the more reason to keep your wife covered with the scriptures above. When you hear or see her give you cues that she’s struggling in these areas, rely on the Word of God to do what it can do.
Blessed in the Work of Her Hands
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)
Whether your wife works outside the home, inside the home, or doesn’t have a “traditional” job at all – this is still a great set of scriptures to pray over her. The work she does in helping take care of the homefront is just as vital as any other job.
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. (3 John 1:2)
Although this scripture starts with “Dear friend,” this can certainly be substituted for “Dear (wife’s name).” This is an overall declaration that her health would be well, as well as her soul. This doesn’t have to be prayed for only if/when she is sick. Get in the habit of praying for her good health continually.
Grace and Humility
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. (Hebrews 12:15)
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)
Grace and humility are often seen as the building blocks for having wisdom and understanding. Pray that your wife would not allow bitter roots to grow, but instead that she would seek to always be in right standing with the Father. Also, pray that she would not be prideful but always remain humble in everything she does.
If you have not started praying for your wife on a daily basis, there is no better time than to start now. Use the Scriptures mentioned above as a starting point for praying specific things over her. This is something that needs to be robotic or mundane, but instead with belief and expectation. God’s Word is alive and well and praying over your wife will impact your marriage more than you can imagine.
